This just in, the EU seems intent on self destructive behavior no matter what. According to Reuters, the European Union will go ahead with still more sanctions against Russia later today, even despite the ceasefire Putin brokered in Ukraine. With many in the EU outraged by the effects of the last round of sanction-counter-sanction, one has to wonder at the under-the-table deals going on. The EU cannot afford more economic pressure on already over-taxed constituents and citizens.
Commission spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde-Hansen told offered this:
“And now we’ve reached the stage where the package has been agreed at the level of Coreper [the Permanent Representatives Committee] and the package is due to be formally adopted by the member states through written procedure later today, so the procedure is ongoing.”
According to Ria Novosti, the details will come out in the EU’s Official Journal on Tuesday, but already Russia has warned off tough sanctions of their own should this occur. The EU and Washington been imposing economic sanctions against Moscow since Crimea’s reunification with Russia back in March.
Counter sanctions announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin the last time the EU imposed same, those crippled many farmers and small businesses across the EU dependent on Russia exports.
Just in from EurActive, the EU also announced these current sanctions would be lifted if the ceasfire in Ukraine holds, and if Russia would withdraw troops from eastern Ukraine. It seems obvious to point out here, no verifiable proof Russian troops are even in Ukraine has been shown.
Also, in news from the Kremlin today, President Putin and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev discussed proposal for a reorganization of Russia’s ministry structure.
